First of all, annual maintenance is, many times, a condition of equipment manufacturer's warranties. So, you shouldn't think about going without HVAC maintenance any more than you would go without an oil change in your car.

To start with, as the air flows across your indoor coil, any particles in that air not trapped by a filter, often end up staying on the coil and decreasing it's capacity. While a high efficiency air cleaner often keeps this from happening, it too, if not properly maintained, can decrease system capacity; leaving you uncomfortable and paying higher utilities. In the same manner a dirty indoor coil robs your system of efficient operation, a dirty outdoor coil can as well. Plants that are too close to outdoor units, as well as grass clippings, leaves, and other debris that get stuck to the outdoor coil are often culprits of system damage, loss of capacity, and inefficiency.
